You say goodbye, we say hello!
The Umihara Kawase series has been a long lived but short-sequeled set of games, starting way back in 1994 on the Super Famicom (or the SNES, for you Western folk). Following the exploits of our titular star, this game somehow embodies everything you'd expect from a Japanese game. It's got a unique concept, cute artwork, bizarre world settings and a difficulty level that makes you gnash your teeth but never break your controller. Our protagonist, Kawase, has gotten teleported into a weird reality where fish walk around like people and the terrain changes drastically without warning. Thankfully, she's equipped with the most important tool of all: her fishing rod, which serves as both a weapon and a transportation device. She can hook onto floors and ceilings to swing onto new platforms Indiana Jones style, or stun the walking fish and reel them in to keep them in her iconic pink rucksack. If this all sounds terribly strange, it is, and it's wonderful.
The latest installment, Sayonara Umihara Kawase, has recently launched on Steam, making the first time this game series has landed on PCs in the West. Playism is honored and proud to be a gateway storefront to bring these incredible exploits to players around the world! Starting October 15th, Sayonara Umihara Kawase will be available for purchase from Playism.
Sayonara runs on nearly any machine made in the last ten years, so whether you're a PC enthusiast or just a casual gamer, you'll be able to enjoy the whole experience on just about any computer. I highly recommend using a controller for your adventuring, as I personally found the keyboard to be less authentic in the grand scheme of things. I played the DS version some years ago, and it was one of the best random titles I had ever picked up (I knew nothing about the series at the time, just that it came recommended). The PC version plays even better, as the big screen experience allows you to appreciate all the nuance details in the game, like the existence of everything Japan: the street signs, the guard rails, even the unexplained appearance of daikon at completely inappropriate junctures.
Be warned: Sayonara is TOUGH. Built with the classic 16-bit era in mind, the game can be unforgiving and you may find yourself utterly annoyed that a small misstep causes you to start the whole stage over again. Thankfully, for those of us who are less puzzle minded, every level does have a “stage tutorial” option. When selected, the computer will do a less-than-optimal run of the stage to show you how it COULD be done. This is ideal for both getting over tight humps and also giving ideas on how to trim down your time. Yes, you could do a shot-for-shot replay, but where's the fun in that?
Enough chatter: it's time for the adventure to begin! For the next week, a 10% discount is applied, bringing the game down to $13.49! Grab Sayonara Umihara Kawase today!
