The Use of Life

The Use of Life is a “game book”-style multi-ending JRPG. The main character’s various “attachments” fluctuate in accordance with the choices the player makes, and the ending changes depending on “the use of life” you choose through your journey.

The Chapter 4 Misha Route update has finally been released on November 30, 2023! Those who have cleared the 3rd chapter of the same route can start right where they left off. This update also includes the maximum levels of all the advanced classes, so battles are now more exciting than ever!

◆ Bug Fixes
・Fixed a bug where enemies did not have an aura when activating Undying Curse
・Fixed a bug where if a player changed the game settings when no save files exist and then closed out of the game, an incomplete save data would be created in the first slot
・Fixed a bug where effects of previously-used Enchant Skills would be added again when a new Enchant Skill is applied in battle
・Fixed a bug where the number of Retry Chances did not reset to 5 after clearing Chapter 3
・Fixed a bug where the desert BGM continued to play in Chapter 4 after clearing Chapter 3
・Fixed a bug where restarting from the beginning of Chapter 4 after clearing Chapter 3 would restart from the beginning of Chapter 3 instead
・Fixed a bug where closing the game after clearing Chapter 3 and loading the save file would result in a pitch-black screen
・Fixed a bug where players did not get EXP from opening a certain door from the inside in the desert underground section
・Fixed a bug where Gargantua's maximum HP appears to be increased in Hard Mode, even though it actually does not increase
・Fixed a bug where if you died in a battle against Gargantua after using the Paralysis trap and then retried, the Paralysis effect would also be applied to another battle
・Fixed a bug where selecting "Do-over" after losing against Gargantua would not reset Gargantua's HP and instead reflect previously done damage
・Fixed a bug where if players successfully rested during the Gargantua battle, the background music would stop playing

◆ Equipment Adjustments
・Changed the weight of Stain
・Raised the P. ATK stat of Baldos' Blade. It now also raises maximum HP
・Raised the P. ATK stat of Cleansing Blade and lowered its M. ATK stat
・Added a new piece of equipment with high P. DEF that nullifies Blind
・Added a new piece of equipment (accessory) that nullifies Paralysis
・Raised the defenses of Warding Armor and strengthened its resistances to Poison, Paralysis, and Blind Resistance +75%
・Raised the defenses and Heat and Cold resistances of Great Sage Garb and added Curse Resistance
・Added physical resistance to Shock-Resistor and adjusted its defenses
◆ Skill/Class Adjustments
・Added one more turn to the status boost effect of Final Tachi ・

・Adjsuted the Skills and stats acquired by the Swordmage upon leveling up
・Lowered the CP cost of Phosphorend from 2 to 1, and raised its MP cost from 15 to 20
・Added the defensive Spell Enchant Earth to the Swordmage
・Changed the Swordmage Spell Enchant Chaos into an incantation Spell, and strengthened its status boost effect and power

・Raised the amount of VIT gained by Curseblade levels from 4 to 6

・Added sound effects to the event in Chapter 2-A when you surround the fish with ice
・Adjusted the position of the animation for Kangah-Rooh's Hook
・Adjusted the positions of the Pala Gaya warriors (solo, duo, group, and Elyon) in battle
・Changed the sound effect for Rancor Blade and fixed the issue where it was quieter than intended
・Added the dialogue option "Chat" to talk to Elmaise in Chapter 4
・Players are now allowed to return to the entrance after moving to the throne room. This does not apply to save files where you have already entered the throne room—please select "Last Resting Spot" upon defeat

・Added an experimental difficulty level where the timing for a perfect dodge randomly changes slightly every time.

・Added a brief grace period before dialogue choices are presented. (This change may be reverted depending on player reception)

・Added the ability to swap the equipped weapon mid-battle from the Tech menu.
・Equip a sub-weapon from the menu to swap between the main weapon during battle.
・Players loading an existing save file will find that they have the Blunt Sword equipped. This is totally intentional and definitely not a side-effect of the update.

・Fixed an issue where after defeating Elyon, the event that occurs behind the door appears to be completed, and players could not interact with the stairs.
・Fixed an issue where if players somehow moved to an undiscovered event, they would become unable to progress further.
・Fixed an issue where if players chose to escape to the ruins during the sandstorm event and rolled a Success, and in the following event rolled a Critical Success, the background would be stuck on the [*]Fixed an issue that caused Goshe's HP to drop to 0 when equipping the Robes of Death at 1 HP.
・Fixed an issue where Iai Slash Lv2 did not properly reflect the special attributes of the player's equipped weapon.

 ※To players whose character disappeared after defeating Elyon and leaving the underground: this update should fix this issue and Goshe should appear again. You will be able to progress by going underground and climbing the stairs back up again.

2023/03/14 Ver0.3.02

・Fixed a bug where if players got a Game Over in the desert and chose "Do-over" to start from the beginning of the desert section, the items received from Misha would disappear from their inventory.
 ※If you have already encountered this bug and lost your items, you will be able to regain them by getting a Game Over and choosing to do-over from the beginning of the desert section again.
 (This is an emergency fix to solve the issue for people who have already encountered it. We will fix the event itself to work as intended by the end of March. Until then, please use the above method to regain your items.)

・Fixed an issue in the underground building where the money, which is supposed to be the second obtainable item, appeared as the third item.

A Story Influenced by Your Use of Life

In this game, your choices as the player will influence Goshe, the main character, as well as his thoughts and various attachments in life, represented by flames.

Whether Goshe uses his life for his own selfish purposes or sacrifices himself to help others is entirely up to you. The endings of this game are simply the conclusions of the various ways of life, and there are no "Good" or "Bad" endings.

Tense Battles that Balance Stasis and Action

The Use of Life features unique battles that combine the strategy of a turn-based battle system with the quick reflexes and action of a QTE system.

Each turn, both you and your enemy get to choose 3 actions, which you then take turns to perform. How will you deal with the enemy's upcoming flurry of attacks? How will you time your own attacks to deal the most damage? Your skill and strategy will determine the outcome of battle.

Even if you can't defeat an enemy, the game is designed so that you will gradually figure out how to deal with them and win. Boss battles are especially tense, where you frequently have to toe the line between life and death, and we strive to deliver the highest satisfaction you can possibly get after defeating a strong enemy.

Adventure Book Style Events

Events in this game are narrated in an adventure book style, and some events come with TRPG-esque dice rolls that determine the event's outcome.

The same event will play out differently depending on your choices and the dice roll results.

You can choose to proceed cautiously and choose the safest options, or bravely throw yourself into every opportunity for battle you come across—it's all up to you, and your actions will affect Goshe's personality.

Customization

Goshe, the main character, obtains incredible power through a certain Curse. Through encounters with death, he can gain experience which can be used to strengthen his own abilities.

Not only will you gain different advantages in battle depending on what abilities you choose to invest in, but the outcome of events outside of battle can also be heavily influenced by your stats.

On top of that, by leveling up and unlocking new levels for the various classes, you can learn a wide variety of Skills and Spells to use in battle.

While this title is technically a JRPG, we are not aiming for a "good old JRPG" style, but rather a "good 'new' JRPG" style, in hopes of showing that this kind of evolution is absolutely possible.
